All-electric vehicles (EVs) run on electricity only. They are propelled by one or more electric motors powered by rechargeable battery packs.
EVs have several advantages over vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICEs):
Energy efficient. Electric vehicles use about 75 percent of energy created. Gas uses 20%*
Environmentally friendly. EVs emit no tailpipe pollutants, although the power plant producing the electricity may emit them. Electricity from nuclear-, hydro-, solar-, or wind-powered plants causes no air pollutants.
Performance benefits. Electric motors are 100 percent torque at a stop so they provide quiet, smooth and stronger acceleration that require significantly less maintenance than gas cars.
Reduce energy dependence. Electricity is always domestic energy source.
Did you know? The environmental benefits of plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles increase if they are powered by electricity from ‘green’ sources such as solar, wind or small-scale hydroelectricity.
EVs have Driving ranges. Range is typically around100 miles on a full charge but it’s increasing the range Yearly on new models and and others are getting 200 to 300 miles.
Recharge time. Fully recharging the battery pack can take 4 to 8 hours. A “fast charge” to 80% capacity can take 30 min.
Bulk & weight: Battery packs are heavy so they help keep the vehicle hugging the ground. They do take up more space in trunks but most vehicles have more than enough room for payload.
However, researchers at MIT and others are working on improved battery technologies to increase driving range and decrease recharging time, weight, and cost. These factors will ultimately determine the future of EVs.
Also expect electric motors to be more efficient or even dual motors too.
